A lot of women assume boudoir has to come with an occasion. A wedding coming up, an anniversary to mark, a gift to hand someone on a special night. Those sessions are wonderful, and I photograph plenty of them. But I want to talk about a different kind of session today, because it might be the one you’ve quietly been wanting.

The kind you do just for you.

No album to give away. No date on the calendar you’re racing toward. No one waiting at home to be impressed. Just you, in front of the camera, for no reason other than you wanted to see yourself this way. That’s the session Ms. T came in for, and she drove all the way from Knoxville to my Nashville studio to do it.

You Are Allowed to Want This for Yourself

Here’s something I wish more women believed. You don’t need permission, and you don’t need to earn it. Wanting to feel beautiful is reason enough on its own.

Ms. T didn’t book because someone asked her to. She booked because she was drawn to the idea and decided to follow it. When she looked back on the experience, what stood out to her wasn’t a gift she gave someone else. It was what she got to keep. In her words, “I went outside of my comfort zone with my looks and posing, and it absolutely paid off. In the future, I’ll take that confidence with me.”

That last part is the whole point of a session like this. The photos are beautiful, but the way you carry yourself afterward is what actually comes home with you.

Nervous at First Is Completely Normal

If the idea of doing this alone, for yourself, feels a little vulnerable, that’s normal too. Ms. T said she was a tiny bit nervous walking in, and it didn’t last. Here’s how she described it: “I quickly became very comfortable. The vibe in Colleen’s studio is very calming, and Colleen herself is so sweet and welcoming.”

That calm is something I build on purpose. When you come in without a gift or an occasion attached, there’s no pressure to perform for anyone. It’s just us, taking our time, figuring out what makes you feel most like yourself. Ms. T said it best in her review: “I was extremely comfortable during our shoot.”

No Shopping Required

One worry I hear from women booking for themselves is that they’ll need to go buy a whole new wardrobe to make it worth it. You don’t. What She’d Tell You

When I asked Ms. T what she’d say to a woman still thinking about it, her answer was simple. “Do it. You will not be disappointed.” And when I asked if there was anything she’d change, she told me she loved her experience and wouldn’t change a thing. She even said she’d love to do it again one day.

That’s what happens when you finally do something just for you. You stop wondering what it would have been like, and you start wanting more of that feeling.
